The History of Miami Airboat Tours

The family behind Miami Airboat Tours Company has been in the airboat tour and tourist attraction industry for three generations. They were right there when the first airboat was built in 1942, built simply from three sheets of plywood and a few 2×4′s and powered by a slant six-tank motor and a sawed off jet propellor without a cage. And they were there when the first commercial airboat was built in 1945, a huge step-up from the primitive work boats of just a few years before. These first commercial airboats were used for charter fishing excursions, as they provided a fast and easy way to gain access to the shallow salt flats of Florida Bay. All kinds of fish could be found in these waters – snook, reds, trout, tarpon and many others – of what is now Everglades National Park. Locals of Everglades City, Florida found that these airboats were a great way to travel in the swamplands of the Florida Everglades and the tourist appeal was obvious. The airboat tour was born.
